First what does Cannonical Scripture have to say???
Matthew Chapter 4 (King James Version)
1. Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6. And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9. And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
That seems pretty straight forward right? -- Literal Fundamentalist would simply have you believe that this was demonstrating Yeshua standing up to Satan; evil its self, and it was also showing that Christ was Sinless.
But is that it?? Could there be an even higher singifigance? According to Ted Andrews in his book "The Occult Christ: The Hidden & Mystical Secrets of Christianity" he elludes to higher meaning than just the literal and mudane.
lets look at page 72 and 73 of Ted's book.
A Different Kind Of Ministry: The Temptation and Illumination.
For humanity, the temptation is the facing of our lower self, the transmuting of our lower passions entirely. It is a process often termed in metaphysical parlance as the " Meeting of The Dwellers on the Threshold." It is all of those things that we have painted over, shoved to the back of the closet and pretended didn't exist. It is every negative emotion and thought ever created by us, in this lifetime and from every lifetime. We must face the energy of what we have put out into the world, love ourselves in spite of it and transmute it once and for all. We must transmute the Guardian, which bars the way to the spiritual world by expelling from the soul and transmuting the last vestige of our baser emotions. Only then can we fully cross the threshold to true spirituality.
The Christ had no lower self, for the Christ had never walked upon the earth. The vehicle of Jesus had been purified and cleansed of his Guardian. Humanity, on the other hand, had a collective Guardian, a miasma of negativity that hindered the sight of the spiritual. This collective negativity and imbalance was alive within the magnetic aura of the earth itself. This collective Guardian would be faced, so that the process of higher initiation for all of humanity could be accelerated and the Guardian dispelled. By the Christ facing the collective Guardian, the glue that bound it together would be loosed, facilitating the process for each individual to extract his or her own and transmute it once and for all.
It is this process that is reflected in the scriptures concerning the withdrawal into the desert, following the Baptism. There the Christ would encounter three temptations by the devil, the collective Guardian. The three temptations are the three things that most strongly trip humanity up. The inivitation by the devil to turn the stones into bread is the temptation of the lower senses that must be overcome. The devil then offers him Kingdoms and the entire world which is the temptation of power that must be overcome. The third invitation of the devil for the Christ to throw himself off the top of the temple in Jerusalem is the overcoming of fear that must be faced. ( Keep in mind, though, that these temptations and the explanations given may reveal even deeper significance to those wishing to explore them more fully.)
The period of the "Temptation" was the time in which the illumination of Jesus with the mission and energy of the now overshadowing Christ consciousness occured. It was during this time in the desert, those "forty days" following the Baptism, that it was revealed that it was necessary to make accessible to all what had until then remained the privilege of a few. He was about to preach the "Gospel of the Kingdom of Heaven" - a mystical and ancient term reffering to the mysteries. He was about to take the Great Mysteries out of the hands of the exclusive and powerful and place them within reach of the average individual. He was to interpret for them the teachings that previously had been exclusive to initiates only. To accomplish this, he added an inner light, the Power of Love, and the strength of action - the Divine Feminine manifesting through the Christ.
